Carolyn crampton
Carolyn Crampton is a painter whose work is shaped by classical art, layered technique, humor, and a lifelong connection to image-making. Inspired by antique paintings and museum traditions, her practice often involves studying and reinterpreting fragments of historic works while bringing her own hand and point of view into the process.
Working in oil and acrylic, Crampton builds her paintings slowly through cross-hatching, scumbling, and layered refinement. While she is often encouraged to “paint looser,” she remains drawn to the structure, discipline, and visual richness of classical painting.
Raised in Larchmont, New York, Crampton began painting at an early age and later received her B.F.A. in painting with a minor in art history from the University of Colorado. Her influences range from European museum collections to Charles Addams, New Yorker cartoonists, Mad Magazine, and Eloise.
Before fully returning to painting, Crampton was active in San Francisco’s music scene, creating punk fanzines, playing in bands, and making collage-based flyers. Her work has been exhibited in Bay Area galleries and juried competitions and is held in private and corporate collections.
